Defending champ takes second
After a dominating year, Hahnville High School Boys’ Golf Team traveled to Shreveport to defend their state title. Held at Olde Oaks Golf Club, the tournament was a multiple day event against the finest golfers in Louisiana. At the end of the first day of competition, the Tigers were in third place, tying Catholic High School of Baton Rouge. The leader, Sulphur High School, led Hahnville by seven strokes, and Mandeville High School was in second, leading them by four strokes.
After the first day, team scores for were Sulphur with a 288, followed by Mandeville with a 291 and third was Hahnville and Catholic High of Baton Rouge with 295.
As for individual play, Junior Dayton Bordelon and Senior Seth Defrene each shot 73. Next in line, Sophomore Andrew Noto finished with a 74, Junior Derek Bonvillian shot a 74 and Freshman Caleb Lampert finished with an 82.
The day one leader proved to be difficult foe for Hanhville: “We played Sulphur four times during 2006 and only once were we able to out score them, the first day of a two day tournament in Lake Charles,” said Hahnville Coach Ronald Cantrelle.
The second day of competition proved better for the Hahnville Boys, as Noto fired a two under par, 70. Seth Defrene was also impressive shooting an even par 72, and Dayton Bordelon finished one over with a 73. Derek Bonvillian finished with a 75, and Caleb Lampert shot an 82.
While improving from day one, in the end, the defending champs came up short. Sulpher finished in first with 578, Hahnville finished in second with a score of 586. Taking third place, Catholic High shot a 589, and Mandeville finished fourth with a 591.
“Hahnville High shot 10-strokes better than the previous year and still wasn’t able to beat the remarkable team of Sulphur High,” said Coach Cantrelle, adding, “We’re very proud of our boys, they have finished as runner-up in 2004, State Champion in 2005 and runner-up again in 2006, and who knows, maybe another State Champion in 2007, we lose only 1-senior and we’re 4-players solid for next year.”
