Though he is still a few months away from beginning his senior season, Hahnville cornerback Jerqwinick Sandolph already knows where he will play football a year from now.
Last week, the 6’2, 180-pounder committed to LSU head coach Les Miles during the LSU Family Bayou Picnic. Now, Sandolph is set to join cousin Alfred Blue in wearing the purple and gold.
Sandolph, who runs around a 4.5 40-yard-dash, finished his junior season with five interceptions and basically shut down one half of the field for opposing offenses. He committed to LSU over offers from Memphis, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Western Kentucky.
Hahnville head football coach Lou Valdin said that Sandolph is the complete package.
“He has size at 180 pounds but he can cover ground lightning fast,” Valdin said. “He is a vicious tackler and has excellent coverage skills.”
Valdin said that Sandolph is not a vocal leader, but instead leads by example.
“He never says a word, but he gives 100 percent on every play, in the weight room and at practice,” Valdin said. “He has one speed…full speed.”
Valdin said that Sandolph makes good grades and has never had any discipline problems.
“He is a good kid and all of his teachers love him,” he said. “LSU is getting the total package.”
Sandolph projects as a safety in college, but Valdin said that he is a hybrid defensive player who can also have success at corner.
“I think he will be a tremendous player because he can play corner and safety,” he said. “In the SEC, they use a lot of Cover Two defense, so safeties have to be good tacklers and good in coverage.
“Because Jerqwinick is really a hybrid, I believe he will have a lot of success at LSU.”
