Tigers must win — Wildcats have nothing to lose

In rivalries, it’s said that you can throw the records of the two teams involved out of the window because something more important than a win or loss is at stake – pride.

But the record is important this year for the Hahnville football team, who is currently tied for first place in District 8-5A with Higgins and East St. John. Each one of those teams is 3-1 in district play and the Tigers must beat Destrehan Friday night to be assured of a playoff spot.

A win would also guarantee that the Tigers finished in at least a tie for the district championship.

It’s the opposite for the Wildcats, who are 2-7 on the year and are still looking for their first district win of the season.

Destrehan is already eliminated from the playoffs, which means that Friday’s game against the Tigers is the team’s most important of the season. A win won’t do much for the Wildcats as far as their record is concerned, but it will do much more for Destrehan in the grand scheme of things.

Ending the season on a positive note by beating your rival is something that the squad can build upon next season. Besides, not many teams get to end the season with a victory.

The Wildcats will have to earn it however, as Hahnville has looked like the more complete squad this season. The Tigers have also won the last two in a row against Destrehan by big margins. Hahnville beat Destrehan 48-10 in 2009 and defeated the Wildcats 35-14 last year.

Hahnville hosts Destrehan at 7 p.m. on Friday.
