Former rivals team up to lead Delgado to World Series

Two former St. Charles Parish high school baseball rivals teamed up last week to help lead Delgado Community College to the Junior College World Series for only the third time in the school’s history.

Delgado advanced to the World Series after winning the South Central District Championship, which was held in Neosho, Mo. Brooks Vial, who played for Hahnville High School, went the distance on the mound to give his team a 3-2 win over Crowder College on the opening day of the district tournament.

Vial gave up one earned run while striking out seven in nine innings.

Vial’s win pushed Delgado into the title game against Seminole State College. With Delgado holding on to a slim 7-5 lead in the championship, former Destrehan pitcher Scott Stonestreet entered the game in the eighth inning and blanked Seminole State in the ninth to secure the win.

Stonestreet, who earned the save, allowed just one hit in two innings.

Stonestreet has pitched 41.2 innings for Delgado this season and has allowed 10 earned runs while striking out 38 batters. He has a 2.16 ERA and a 5-2 record.

Vial is currently 9-2 on the season with 49 strikeouts and a 3.13 ERA.

Vial graduated from Hahnville last year and signed with Delgado after an impressive senior season where he went 6-3 with a 1.49 ERA. He was named the MVP of District 7-5A that year.

Stonestreet graduated from Destrehan in 2010 after receiving first team all-district honors. He signed with the University of New Orleans before joining Delgado.

Delgado will open play in the World Series on Saturday, May 24 at 7:30 p.m. against Chattahoochee Valley Community College at Suplizio Field in Grand Junction, Colo.
