Lady Wildcats have won 23 straight games

The Destrehan Lady Wildcats continue to cruise through district play, beating Hahnville, Thibodaux and Central Lafourche to remain perfect with a 13-0 record.

In fact, Destrehan’s only loss, which came out of district, occurred on Nov. 25. Since that time the Lady Wildcats have rolled to 23 straight wins.

“We have those games where we don’t play up to par, but as a whole the girls have come a long way this season,” Destrehan head coach Angi Butler said. “I have seen them grow individually as well as a team. As a coach, I know the hard work we put into our practices, the determination we have going into a game and the excitement that has followed every win.

“This has been an awesome season, and we are looking forward to the playoffs and what that level of excitement will bring to this team.”

Last week, Destrehan crushed rival Hahnville for the second time this season, beating the Lady Tigers 63-22.

Cara Ursin led her team to the win with 19 points. Jordan Dabney finished with 12 points while Alana Lawrence added six points.

Though it was a big win, Butler felt her team struggled in the first half.

“We didn’t play as well as I had hoped. We missed several shots from the perimeter early on in the game,” she said. “At halftime we were 11-for-40 from the field so I told my girls they were not allowed to shoot anything outside the paint. Making this adjustment was huge for us.”

Destrehan’s next five baskets in the second half were layups resulting in 10 straight points.

Butler said that one of the reasons her team had so much success against Hahnville was that the Lady Tigers were down to only eight players due to injuries.

“We have 13 on varsity and are able to substitute for one another in order to keep our players rested and consistent on the court,” she said.

The Lady Wildcats followed up the win against Hahnville with a 60-41 victory over Thibodaux.

Dabney finished with 22 points in the game, while Ursin added 19. Alexis Jackson had five points.

The Lady Wildcats took a 17-4 lead in the first quarter and extended it to 33-18 at the break.

Butler was pleased with her team’s defensive effort against Thibodaux, who had an 11-1 district record heading into the game with Destrehan.

“We were aggressive and caused multiple turnovers within our full-court press,” Butler said. “We were quick getting back to the paint, preventing them from getting those fast break opportunities.”

Butler said her team has become more aggressive and much quicker on transitions as the season has progressed, which she credits to her team’s chemistry.

“The chemistry between the girls continues to be a strong attribute on the court and their determination to win is amazing,” she said. “The girls listen to the coaching staff and are willing to make adjustments when needed.”

On Monday, Destrehan cruised past Central Lafourche 67-24 for their 23rd consecutive win. They will play their final game of the regular season when they host South Lafourche on Thursday. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:15 p.m.
