Tigers explode in third quarter as they dominate at Bourgeois

Dakota Williams of Hahnville.

Hahnville excelled in all three phases as it got back in the win column Friday night with a dominant performance at H.L. Bourgeois, winning 51-7 in District 7-5A action.

Dakota Williams scored two touchdowns through the air. Calvin Smith rushed for two touchdowns. Ryan Gregson threw touchdown passes to Williams, Josh Smith and Titus White. Chase Brooks added a score on the ground.

Williams scored early to give Hahnville a 7-0 lead. H.L. Bourgeois (1-6, 0-4) answered to tie things up, then Brooks got loose for the Tigers’ second score of the day with just over two minutes left in the first quarter.

That score held until Calvin Smith’s touchdown run late in the first half that made it 21-7.

Hahnville recorded its first of two safeties on the night to extend the lead to 23-7 early in the second half – that sparked an explosion of Tiger offense in the third quarter, as HHS scored four touchdowns in the period to make it 49-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

“I thought we had a good, balanced performance,” said Hahnville head coach Daniel Luquet. “Good offense, good defense, good special teams – some nice returns. I was pretty pleased with how we put all three phases together.”

Defensively, Hahnville shuffled some players around up front, creating some mismatches for Hahnville lineman Cameron Darensbourg to shine and create havoc in the Braves’ backfield.

“He plays hard … he’s a physical guy who works real hard in the weight room. He’s unselfish and does whatever he’s supposed to do,” said Luquet. “I thought he played really well in a position he hadn’t played a lot of previously.”

Hahnville (4-4, 2-2) has an eye on climbing the Class 5A power point rankings to improve its playoff seeding, and Friday’s win was a good start toward that goal.

“I liked the way we took care of business tonight,” Luquet said. “H.L. is in a rebuild from last year’s team … we did what we had to do tonight. We have to keep building and improving from here.”
