The last weekend of July is usually reserved for the best fishing tournament of the summer – the Grand Isle International Tarpon Rodeo.
Families from across St. Charles Parish travel to the event every year for three days of family fun and fishing in a festival-type atmosphere. Some have success in the water, landing on top of the rodeo leader boards.
Local winners at this year’s rodeo included Giuseppe Crovetto, Joshua Savoie, Dustin Mule’ and Danial Dugas.
Crovetto caught the biggest redfish of the rodeo, which weighed 39 pounds and five ounces. Savoie won first in the spadefish category with his catch of 6 pounds and one ounce, while Mule’ caught a grouper weighing 86 pounds and seven ounces. Dugas finished in second place with a Mangrove snapper weighing 9 pounds and 12 ounces.
A new record was set this year when Kevin Hatcher reeled in a Warsaw grouper that weighed 115 pounds. However, the big talk of the tournament was the arrival of a blue marlin that was caught by Lafayette’s Ben Benard and weighed 712 pounds and five ounces.
