Being the third weekend in January, most Louisiana hunters know the season is coming to a close.
Beginning with dove and teal season in August, hunters have been heading outdoors early in the morning for the last five and a half months.
Now, modern firearms for deer is closed in Area 6 and the western zone for ducks closed on sundown Sunday. If you can travel, the eastern zone will be open for one more week for ducks and close on Sunday, Jan. 29.
For local hunters this past weekend, it was a case of trying to be in the right place for good hunting. Cody Morales, Jake Cologne and Ryan Beams managed to harvest six poule deaux and one female spoonbill.
“We were in the wrong place. I knew it was going to be a bad morning when we I stepped out of the mudboat and sunk in the mud and water came into my hip boots,” Morales said.
The situation was just opposite for Todd Duet and his son, Ty. The Luling hunters setup in the Salvador Management Area off the West Canal in the back ponds to duck hunt.
“This was a perfect morning to hunt ducks,” Todd said. “We had fog early but could see the banks before daybreak. It was in the mid 70’s and ducks flew all morning.”
They decoyed very well and managed to harvest a mixture of ducks.
“We had dos-gris, bluewing teal, spoonbills, ringnecks, and gray ducks. They were still trying to decoy when we picked up the decoys,” Todd Duet said.
