Don Raymond Relays held at HHS on Friday

For the first time since 2010, Hahnville High School will host the Don Raymond Relays on Friday.

The track meet features several of the top teams in the area. For the boys, Hahnville and Destrehan will face off against Higgins, Thomas Jefferson and John McDonogh. The girls’ events will feature Hahnville, Destrehan, Higgins, Thomas Jefferson, John McDonogh and Grace King.

Field events will begin at 3:15 p.m. on Friday while the track events are scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.

Admission is $4 and concessions will be sold.

The biggest track event in the parish is named for former Hahnville student-athlete Don Raymond. Not only was Raymond the first black athlete to play a sport at Hahnville, he was also the first black four-sport letterman in the state’s history and was the first black player named to Louisiana’s All-State football team.

But Raymond suffered a tragic fate, dying in a car wreck in 1969 at the age of 16.

Ama author Glenn Singleton will be selling copies of his book, “Crossing Over: A Tribute to Don Raymond” at the meet. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book will go to benefit the Crossing Over Youth Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides financial scholarships to help under-privileged youth with dreams of pursuing careers in athletics and those with learning disabilities.
