DHS Sports Week with Nattie Swan

Check out what’s happening with tennis, dancing, cheer-leading, softball, baseball, basketball, golf, the drum line and the winter guard at Destrehan High School.

BOYS AND GIRLS TENNIS
Star Players.
Boys: Charlie Jones because of his experience and record (he competes on a national circuit). Girls: Kelly Carlson because she is the only girl on the team that went to state finals last year.

Spark Plugs. Boys- Garret Ryan because he came on as a senior and a new player and got second seed. Girls- Ashley Able

Strong Point. Both teams are very dedicated to the sport and are always trying their best to outdo themselves each week.

What we need to work on: Both teams need more players that play at higher levels.

Season Update. N/A

Next Match. Both teams have a match on February 5th at the DHS tennis courts vs. Thibodaux at 3 p.m.

DESTY DARLING DANCERS
Star dancer.
is Jasmine Joseph because she always gives 100 percent and helps teach other dancers. Another star dancer is Kristen Roques, who also happens to be captain, because her choreography and teaching techniques make us look great.

Spark Plug. Melissa Pick because of her great attitude and has a great smile.

Strong Point. Our team’s strong points are our confidence and gorgeous kicks.

What we need to work on: We need to start focusing on our long-term goal of doing our best at competition.

Season Update. N/A

Competition. Marching in Caesar on Feb. 10 and Centurions on Feb. 11. Competing in Disney World on Feb. 23 and on March 10 at Grace King.

CHEERLEADERS
Star Cheerleader
. There is not just one star because everyone brings something different to the table that is essential for the overall success of the team.

Spark Plug. All freshmen have improved in technique and endurance from the beginning of the year.

Strong Point. Technique

What we need to work on: Team Tumbling

Season Update. We will sadly not be competing in competition this year.

SOFTBALL
Star Player.
There is no star on the team because the team plays together as one. Each member of the team is a link in the chain and we need every link in the chain to be successful.

Spark Plug. Amber Arceneaux because she has been very flexible playing catcher and outfield.

Strong Point. Defense and not making mistakes with the ball

What we need to work on: Getting the group as a whole to mesh and make it stop raining so we can practice.

Season Update. N/A

Next Game. Saturday, February 3rd at the DHS softball field vs. South Terrebonne at 11:00 a.m.

BASEBALL
Star Player.
The whole team, offensively, looks really good and it is what we were expecting. The weather was a star player in our practice schedule and it was bad.

Spark Plug. Shane Babineaux because he is a good defensive player and is showing improvement at the plate.

Strong Point. We have great power hitters and fast base runners.

What we need to work on: Defense up the middle and pitching depth.

Season Update. N/A

Next Game. February 10 vs. Denham Springs at Northpark. The time is to be announced.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Star Player.
The team as a whole is starting to act like a team and there is chemistry between the players.

Spark Plug. Not just one player.

Strong Point. We are doing well with rebounds.

What we need to work on: Every game we can find something to fix, whether we win or loser, and we need to work on fundamentals.

Season Update. We are 21-8 and in district we are 3-0.

Next Game: February 30th vs. East Saint John at 7:00 p.m. away.

Nattie’s Sports Week update continues under the pictures below with Boys & Girls Golf.

BOYS AND GIRLS GOLF
Star Players.
Boys: Ryan Steib because of his experience. Girls: Meredith Core because she is the only girl and because of her experience.

Spark Plug. Still working on that.

Strong Points. We are hitting the drives off the tee pretty well.

What we need to work on: Approach shots to the green.

Season Update. N/A

Next Match. Boys- February 15 vs. Saint Martin at 3:13 p.m. The place is to be announced. Girls- To be announced.

WINTER DRUM LINE
Star Player.
Steven Tumblin is our top player. The thing about indoor drum line is that you have to act to portray the point of your piece to the audience and Steven does that very well.

Spark Plug. Alex Williams because he is always the first person to know his music and is always constant. He doesn’t wine and complain during practice, he just does it.

Strong Point. Pit and snares, only because we have many veterans in those positions.

What we need to work on: thoroughly learn the production and then clean it.

Season Update. N/A.

Next Competition. Saturday, Feb.17, 2006 in Thibodaux. For more information on winter drum line visit www.wgi.org.

WINTER GUARD
Star Player.
We don’t have a star; we’re all strong.

Spark Plug. Lindsey Peters

Strong Point. The group’s ability to surprise me at the last minute and get the best result.

What we need to work on: The girls need to work on not having any doubt within themselves.

Season Update. Last week we didn’t place where we wanted but we have high hopes.

Next Competition. Saturday, Feb. 3 at Bonnabel High at 4 p.m.
