This past week two of the best football players in the River Parish Region announced where they will attend college.
Halfback/safety Jerico Nelson announced that he has verbally committed to play for Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Nelson, who Rivals.com ranked as the 23rd best overall athlete in the country, committed to Purdue after being recruited by Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Miami (Fla.) and Tennessee.
The fleet-footed halfback who rushed for over 1,100 yards and scored 15 touchdowns during the Wildcats 15-game 2007 season is expected to play safety for the Boilermakers.
Nelson intercepted 2 passes for the Wildcats in 2006 and he picked off 8 passes playing safety as a sophomore.
The 5-9 ½, 198 pound athlete is the highest rated football player to verbally commit to the Boilermakers during the recruiting process.
Nelson was recruited to Purdue by Boilermaker running back coach Joel Thomas.
While Nelson is taking his football skills out of state, Destrehan outside linebacker Chris Richard has decided to stay in the state of Louisiana to play his college football.
The 6-0, 195 pound standout outside linebacker, who projects to a strong safety spot in the college ranks, has verbally committed to play football at UL-Lafayette.
Richard, an all-district linebacker for the Class 5-A state champion Destrehan Wildcats, was being recruited by Louisiana Tech, Purdue and Southern Mississippi in the recruiting process.
Richard was ranked as one of the top 7 safety prospects in the state of Louisiana, and the Ragin’ Cajuns are very familiar with the talent in the River Parish area.
Former Destrehan head coach Tim Rebowe coaches the safeties for UL-Lafayette.
Nelson and Richard join quarterback Jordan Jefferson and wide receiver Tim Molton, who both verbally committed to play for LSU to accept football scholarships from the unbeaten 2007 state championship squad.
