Not only did the LSU Tigers gain sole possession of the No.1 rating in both the Coaches’ poll and BCS standings this past weekend, but they also secured the services of the top rated prep quarterback in the state of Louisiana.
Jordan Jefferson, the 6-4, 215 pound quarterback from Destrehan High School, verbally committed to play for head coach Les Miles and the LSU Tigers Saturday afternoon.
In the hours before the Tigers faced off against Louisiana Tech, Jefferson and his parents visited LSU head coach Les Miles and he accepted an official scholarship offer to play his college football for LSU.
“It feels real good to be a Tiger,” Jefferson said.
“I had a pretty good feeling that an offer was going to come when they asked me to bring my parents. We had already spoken about it and decided that if LSU offered I was accepting it on the spot because this is the one I had been waiting on. Coach Ed Orgeron and Ole Miss offered me a scholarship, and Auburn, Alabama and Florida starting getting serious about recruiting me the last couple of weeks, but this was the one I really wanted. We still have a lot more to accomplish this season at Destrehan, but this really is a dream come true for me.”
Jefferson, who has led Destrehan High School to an 11-0 record and advanced his team to the second round of the state playoffs, had been widely recognized as the state’s top signal-caller due to his excellent size, strong arm, and escape ability due to his excellent athletic gifts.
The Wildcat signal-caller has passed for 1,994 yards and thrown 18 touchdown passes as a senior.
One Southeast Conference assistant coach, who has scouted Jefferson compares him favorably to Kentucky star senior quarterback Andre’ Woodson.
“In many ways Jordan reminds me of Woodson,” the SEC assistant coach said.
“Jefferson has good height and he sees the field very well. He can make all the throws in the book, Jordan also is a good game manager and to be honest he has better running skills than Woodson did when he came out of high school. You can see Jordan has great confidence in his skills as a passer. This young man has the talent to develop into a big-time player for LSU.”
Jefferson will be teamed up with another Wildcat standout because wide receiver Tim Molton verbally committed to play for LSU in late July.
In a strange bit of recruiting irony, Jordan Jefferson becomes the second Jefferson quarterback to commit to the Tigers in the last month. In mid-October Winter Haven High School in Florida standout signal-caller D.C. Jefferson, who is considered one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the Deep South, announced that he also would be attending LSU.
