Destrehan’s Emery commits to LSU

Destrehan's John Emery has verbally committed to the LSU Tigers.

John Emery will be an LSU Tiger.

Destrehan’s star running back and ESPN’s No. 1 rated senior running back in the country announced via Twitter that he’s verbally committed to LSU, that announcement coming weeks after he decommitted from the University of Georgia.

“Proud to say I’m staying home. COMMITTED. #God1st #GoTigers,” Emery posted to Twitter Tuesday evening, those words accompanied by a photo of Emery wearing an LSU jersey adorned by the No. 4 he’s known for with the Wildcats.

Emery and his Destrehan teammates are the second seed in Class 5A and are preparing to travel to Landry-Walker in Round Two of the state playoffs. DHS is 10-1 this season.

Through 11 weeks, Emery has averaged 8.3 yards per carry, rushing for 1,271 yards and 18 touchdowns. Emery’s also flashed as a receiver, catching 18 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns.

The 5-foot-11, 200 lbs. rusher has long been a coveted recruit at the collegiate level. He initially committed to Georgia during the summer, citing a desire to put the distractions of recruitment aside to focus on his senior season.

But he had a change of heart in late October and reopened his recruitment — and LSU answered the opportunity.
