Despite a team effort, the Tigers fall short in
There were two obstacles standing in the way of Destrehan taking the District 5-5A title, the first was defending champion Hahnville.
After handing the Wildcats a 16-3 loss in the first of their three outings, if Destrehan could have pulled out a win in Hahnville on April 19, it would have opened the possibility of Destrehan or East St. John taking the title, but a 9-1 loss by Destrehan to the Tigers clinched the division for Hahnville for a second straight year.
It’s still one game at a time until May 12, the state championship, for Hahnville coach Kade Rogers he said.
“Destrehan is a good ball club, they’re well coached,” Rogers said. Which probably makes the victory and district title that much sweeter in his eyes.
Hahnville struck early in the first two innings of the April 19 win against Destrehan, on their way to a 9-1 win and the district title. Hahnville pitcher Taylor Domengeaux threw a four hitter to seal the victory and bring his undefeated record to 9-0.
“The seniors have really bought in to what we’ve told them this year,” Rogers said. “They are the true models for the Tiger baseball program.”
Destrehan went through three pitchers in the putting and committed six errors; similar to the first game they played three weeks ago. The Wildcats did finish their three-game stance against Hahnville with a 5-3 win in the last game, but it was too little too late for Destrehan.
The Wildcats finished their season with two straight against John Ehret. For the Tigers, they await their wild-card opponent from District 1-5A in the bidistrict round.
