When a team is able to score three touchdowns in three minutes, things are definitely going their way.
Destrehan stormed out to a 51-0 halftime lead over East Ascension last week by way of three huge touchdown plays that all came minutes before halftime.
The Wildcats returned a fumble for 20 yards to begin the assault, then followed with a 63-yard punt return and an interception return for 61 yards. Linebacker Durrel Bell, wide receiver and return specialist Damaris Johnson, and defensive back Antonio Parker all scored during that span.
“I have never seen three minutes like that in my life,” Destrehan head coach Stephen Robicheaux said. “Obviously, you never want to score that many points.”
After the wild end to the second quarter, Destrehan’s starters only saw action on one more series in the third.
After that, the backups entered the contest and performed admirably by keeping East Ascension off the board until the 1:54 mark in the fourth quarter.
“We didn’t move the ball a whole lot on offense, but defensively we held them,” Robicheaux said “I thought our backups did a good job.”
Destrehan built up a 31-0 lead in the first two quarters before Bell continued the rout by returning a fumble by East Ascension running back Dallas Dyson.
After Destrehan forced East Ascension to punt on their next possession, Johnson dazzled the crowd by switching fields after bobbling the football to put his team up 44-0. With under a minute remaining, East Ascension tried to go to the air, but Parker picked off the pass and returned up field to give his team and even bigger lead.
“I thought we played well offensively and defensively,” Robicheaux said. “I was happy that the team was ready to play, I was happy with the way we played, and we made some big plays early and played well on defense. It’s good to be 9-0.”
Wildcat quarterback Jordan Jefferson led the charge to start the contest, throwing for three scores in the first half including a 52-yard pass to Brandon Armstrong and a 76-yard toss to Tim Molton.
Overall, Jefferson connected on 14 of his 17 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns.
The win assured the Wildcats of at least a tie for the District 6-5A championship and moved the squad into the top spot in the power rankings.
“I don’t know if you worry more about a district championship when you are standing at No. 1 in the power rankings,” Robicheaux said. “If we can win out and stay No. 1, that’s obviously an ideal situation to be in when you enter the playoffs.
“Hopefully, we can finish up that way.”
In order for Destrehan to do that, they must first take care of business on the road against a tough Dutchtown squad that boasts two of the best tailbacks in the state.
Juniors Eddie Lacy and Kelvin York have been unstoppable so far this season and have led the Griffins to a 6-3 season record.
Their wins have come against Assumption, Bourgeois, Broadmoor, West Jefferson, East Ascension, and St. Amant. Their only losses have been to Catholic, East St. John, and Hahnville.
“They have one of the best back tandems in the state and they get it done,” Robicheaux said. “They played East St. John to a three-point game and played Hahnville to a three-point game, and those could have gone either way. They are a good football team and we are going to have to really play well to stop them.
“We definitely have a tough road to hoe here in the last week of the season.”
