Destrehan thrashes Dutchtown, Hahnville beats St. Amant

In what was supposed to be a big showdown between two of the top teams in the state, Destrehan proved that they are in another league entirely.

The Wildcats humiliated Dutchtown 42-7 Friday night, demolishing the Griffins’ ground game and rolling all over them offensively on their way to another district championship.

Dutchtown, who had lost only one game all season, was outgunned from the very beginning, when the Wildcats turned an early turnover into seven points before the Griffins even got a chance to settle into the game.

Wildcat quarterback Wynrick Smothers ran for two touchdowns in the first quarter, then passed for two more in the second to give Destrehan a 28-0 halftime lead. Each of Smothers’ touchdown passes were big gainers, with one going to Corey Vidal for a 35-yard score and the other landing in the sure hands of Brandon Armstrong for a 40-yard touchdown.

Destrehan running back Henry Lennox padded the score in the third, scoring twice on touchdowns of 12 and 58 yards.

Hahnville also ended the regular season on a high note, outscoring St. Amant 42-28. Both Destrehan and Hahnville will find out who they will play in the first round of the playoffs Sunday night.
