The Destrehan High School tennis teams got to practice on their home courts for the first time in a year on Feb. 25.
The teams have been practicing at Ormond Country Club while four new tennis courts were being built at DHS over the past year.
“We are so grateful to have the new courts…It is going to be so nice being able to practice and play our home games on campus again,” said Lee Ann Delatte, DHS girls’ tennis head coach. “We are so thankful to Ormond Country Club for their generosity with their courts, even in such tough times for them.”
Delatte said she hopes to raise funds to have repairs done on the tennis clubhouse at Ormond to show the team’s gratitude.
Quality Court Industries, LLC, constructed the four new courts at Destrehan High from the ground up.
“(The old courts) were aging and had some wear and tear,” said John Rome, administrator of physical plant services for the school district. “They were demolished to fit within the whole new facility outline as part of the Destrehan athletic facility relocation project.”
The athletic facilities project at Destrehan also included a new softball field, modification to the baseball field and construction of a team room and a toilet room.
Not only are the teams’ coaches and players excited about the new courts, but the School Board also received money back from the project.
“In the bid for the construction of the tennis courts, it called for a contingency of $5,000…it’s put there for unknowns in construction,” Rome said. “In this job, we had to use very little of that money which resulted in a credit back to the Board (for $3,825).”
Steve Mainville, DHS boys’ tennis head coach, said that he thinks the courts will give the teams an advantage this season.
“We are very excited to have a true home court advantage again at DHS,” Mainville said. “This can only have a very positive effect on our teams and our school. We can’t wait (until) the first home match on our new courts.”
