For the third time this season, the Dutchtown Griffins got the best of the Destrehan Wildcats.
The Griffins completed a district sweep Tuesday as pitcher Troy Lewis hurled a no-hitter against the Wildcats in his team’s 9-0 victory. With the win, Dutchtown improved to 7-0 in district play while the Wildcats dropped to 4-3.
Lewis struck out six and walked one from the stripe, and also hit a first-inning home run that set the stage for what was to follow.
Dutchtown hit five home runs in the game, with a three-run shot from Jacob Waguespack in the third giving the Griffins a 4-0 lead.
Dutchtown built on the lead from there, adding another run in the third, one in the fourth and three more in the seventh for the big victory.
Dutchtown handed Destrehan a loss in the first district game of the season, but after that, the Wildcats reeled off four-straight wins against Hahnville, East St. John, St. Amant and East Ascension.
But when Dutchtown rolled back into the schedule, the Wildcats saw their win streak end.
The Griffins beat the Wildcats 8-6 on Saturday. The Griffins led 6-0 in the fourth and added a run in the fifth to go on top 7-0.
But Destrehan stormed back in the sixth.
Pinch-hitter Brett Hebert singled to right center to start the frame and Edwin DeLaCruz was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.
A single by Jace Weber’s loaded the bases, and a following single by Zach Schexnaydre’s ended the shutout.
Jesse Bryant and Cameron Quigley were both hit by pitches, cutting the lead to 7-3 with no outs. Lewis came in to relieve Waguespack and the wildness continued.
Lewis walked Ryan Burks and Brandt Bourgeois to make it 7-5. But Lewis recovered and struck out the next three Wildcats without giving up another run.
Dutchtown added another run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Wildcats rallied again in the seventh when Zach Schexnaydre drew a one-out walk, and moved to third on Jesse Bryant’s double over the bag at third. Schexnaydre scored on Cameron Quigley’s sacrifice fly, but the threat ended when Ryan Burks popped out to end the game.
Destrehan begins a huge series with Hahnville Thursday when they host the Tigers at 4 p.m. The teams will then play again on Saturday, April 9 at 2 p.m. at Hahnville.
