Destrehan routs West Jefferson 47-7 in season opener

Destrehan running back Will Matthews rushed for 154 yards and three touchdowns in the first half to pace the Wildcats to a 47-7 blowout win over West Jefferson Friday night.

Destrehan’s explosive offense stole the show in the season opener, with the Wildcats storming out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. Randy Harvey gave Destrehan a 3-0 advantage with a 23-yard field goal, and Matthews scored his first touchdown of the night on a 20-yard run.

Destrehan added another touchdown in the first minute of the second quarter. Sophomore quarterback Marquise Darensbourg connected with senior receiver Alfred Smith for a 31-yard gain to take Destrehan to the West Jeff 26. Matthews picked up 17 yards a play later, and then scored on a nine-yard run to give his team a 17-0 lead.

Later in the second quarter Matthews broke through the West Jeff defensive line and tore down the right sideline for a 55-yard touchdown that put the Wildcats on top 24-0.

The Destrehan defense held West Jeff scoreless throughout the first half and helped set up a Wildcat touchdown to start the third.

Defensive tackle Gerald Wilbon busted through the West Jeff offensive line and laid a hit on Buccaneer quarterback Coley Ransaw. Ransaw dropped the football, which was scooped up by Destrehan linebacker Peyton Steib.

Three plays later, Darensbourg tossed a 17-yard touchdown to put Destrehan up 31-0.

West Jeff finally got on the scoreboard a series later when Ransaw threw an 81-yard touchdown, but on West Jeff’s following offensive series Ransaw was called for intentional grounding in the end zone, which resulted in a safety.

On the ensuing kickoff, Destrehan’s John Williams made West Jeff pay. He fielded the ball at his own 24 and sped 75 yards to the West Jeff 1-yard line. Destrehan lost five yards on the next play, but Darensbourg regrouped to throw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Kirk Merritt that gave the Wildcats a 40-7 lead.

The Wildcats will return to action on Friday, Sept. 9 when they host Helen Cox. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
