Destrehan moves on, Hahnville falls

The Destrehan Wildcats systematically broke down Jesuit Friday night, scoring a single touchdown in each quarter on their way to a 29-7 first round victory.

Meanwhile, Dutchtown got the better of Hahnville in a district rematch, using three touchdowns from Kelvin York to put the Tigers away 35-7.

Destrehan took an early lead thanks to the quickness of quarterback Wynrick Smothers, who continually escaped pressure by scampering out of the pocket. Smothers eventually scored on a 1-yard run to give Destrehan a 7-0 first quarter lead.

In the second quarter, Smothers relied on his arm to fire a 6-yard touchdown pass to Kyron King, which put the Wildcats on top 14-0 heading into the half.

In the second half, Jesuit running back and Tulane commitment Payton Jason scored on a 5-yard run to bring Jesuit to within a touchdown. However, Smothers scored again on a 15-yard run of his own shortly after, which put his team on top 20-7.

The Wildcat defense then added two points before the end of the quarter, recording a safety to stretch the Destrehan lead to 22-7.

Wildcat running back Marshall Charles added an exclamation point to the Wildcat win in the fourth quarter, slashing through defenders for a 3-yard touchdown that wrapped up the scoring.

Destrehan will now move on to play Ruston in the second round. Ruston picked up a 21-13 win over Denham Springs in the first round.
