Homecoming week is often wrought with distractions, but Destrehan overcame any that may have arisen to take care of business and emerge victorious in its homecoming game Friday night.
The Wildcats banked a 31-7 District 7-5A victory over Central Lafourche in Destrehan to remain unbeaten at 7-0.
Tramaine Armstrong scored two touchdowns and John Williams added another to account for Kohen Granier’s three touchdown passes. Karon Taylor added a rushing score.
Destrehan led 17-7 at halftime.
While the Wildcats emerged with the win, DHS coach Stephen Robicheaux didn’t see the same intensity he’s become accustomed to — and demands — from his team this season.
“It was a homecoming win,” Robicheaux said wryly. “We didn’t play with a lot of enthusiasm and at halftime we’re right there in a game, 17-7. Central Lafourche had a lot to do with that, of course, they did a good job, moved the ball and made some things difficult for us.
“Our defense played very well in the second half and we were able to put up a couple of scores to put things away. But I didn’t like our intensity level. I hope our guys enjoyed their homecoming, but at the end of the day, we lost some focus and we need to get it back next week.”
Central Lafourche (4-3, 1-2) tied Destrehan 7-7 after capitalizing on a Wildcats fumble, Austin Aucoin connecting with Kenneth Pondexter for a touchdown.
But Destrehan regained the lead in the second quarter when a deep Granier pass was tipped into the arms of Williams, who did the rest en route to a 52-yard touchdown.
“That play got us going a little bit,” Robicheaux said. “We were struggling running the football up the middle like we had been, and we needed something to create some separation.”
Hunter Breit added a 23-yard field goal just before halftime for DHS (7-0, 4-0).
Taylor scored a one-yard touchdown to cap Destrehan’s first possession of the second half. Granier’s 1-yard touchdown pass to Armstrong, the receiver’s second scoring reception of the night, put it away.
“We’ve played seven and won seven, and you can’t do more than that,” Robicheaux said. “So I’m happy in that regard, but we need to be getting better and better each week, and we have some work to do before our next game.”
