District matches heat up for high school baseball
It’s time for district baseball in St. Charles, and the boys teams for Destrehan and Hahnville high schools have both gotten off to great start.
After going head to head for the first of three inter-district games between the two over the next three weeks, it will be a long road for both going into the playoffs.
Destrehan (12-8) finishes their final nine games, all district matchups, against sub .500 teams with the exception of Hahnville, who comes in at (17-6).
Hahnville goes in to their district stretch playing many of the same teams, with the exception of Vandebilt Catholic and Holy Cross who, besides Destrehan, both sport winning records and are likely to offer the best competition of the remainder of their schedule.
In the first of three games the Tigers and the Wildcats play for district supremacy, Hahnville emerged victorious March 31 with a 16-3 win against Destrehan that was called after five innings by virtue of the run rule.
Hahnville coach Kade Rogers was happy about the win, especially against respected district rival Destrehan, but he’s just taking it one game at a time.
In fact, the word “win” for the team has become their motto using the letters as an acronym for “what’s important now.”
“We’re taking it inning by inning, pitch by pitch,” Rogers said.
“But we must continue to improve if we want to be playing on May 12.”
Destrehan is looking to bounce back against East St. John on Tuesday while the Tigers face Vandebilt Catholic in a non-district contest.
“Vandebilt is a good club, they’re well coached. It’s a good chance to keep the team fine-tuned,” Rogers said.
As for Destrehan, coach Marty Luquet said losing to Hahnville puts them at a disadvantage in a district where it will most likely come down to their two teams.
“I don’t think we played our best game against them, and they really got it going right now,” Luquet said about the Tigers.
” But we’re not giving it to them yet.”
Luquet feels it comes down to pitching and defense that wins games, and his team has no problems hitting the ball boasting a .390 team average, the highest one of his team’s has ever had.
“We’re in a spot where every game now becomes very important,” Luquet said. “I think we’ll respond well.”
