Destrehan golfer to participate in PGA Tour

Local resident takes his sport on the road to Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Destrehan resident, Martin Reinschmit, is scheduled to participate in the 2006 PGA Tour Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Aug. 28-Sept. 1. More than 3,800 golfers from all 50 states and 20 countries are expected to participate on 55 Grand Stand Courses during the 23rd annual event.  Reinschmit will be competing for the title of “World’s Ameteur Golf Champion.”

The PGA Tour Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship, the world’s largest single-site golf tournament, is a 72-hole tournament played on 55 Myrtle Beach area courses each August.

Players are flighted according to their handicap with more than 100 golfers playing in each of the tournament’s approximately 39 flights.  At the conclusion of the four rounds, flight winners advance to the 18-hole championship playoff at the renowned Dunes Golf and Beach Club on Fri., Sept. 1.

“We welcomed Mr. Reinschmit to the 23rd annual World Am, said Steve Mays, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday’s tournament director.  “The PGA Tour Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship is the Every Day Golfer’s U.S. Open and we are looking forward to the largest World Am since the 2001 tournament when we welcomed 4,675 golfers to the Grand Stand.  The effort and preparation invested in the months leading up to this year’s tournament will result in the organized, positive event that our golfers expect,” he concluded.

“I love participating in this golfing event.  I have participated for seven years and every year when it is over I begin looking forward to the next year.  I have met all kinds of people in Myrtle Beach.  It is a lot of fun,” said Reinschmit.
