The combination of quarterback Jordan Jefferson to Damaris Johnson will go down as one of, if not the very best pitch and catch combo to ever play in the River Parishes.
This past week both continued to show why we all thought they were exceptional prep football players. For the second time in the past three weeks former Destrehan quarterback Jordan Jefferson has led the Tigers to come from behind victories.
Jefferson, who has had more than his fair share of tough moments on the field for the LSU Tigers, had the best game of his college career in LSU’s 43-36 victory over Ole Miss.
The junior quarterback completed 13 of his 17 passes for a career-high 254 yards, one touchdown pass and one pass interception.
The athletic signal-caller also added 45 yards on 9 carries and scored one rushing touchdown, and he added an important two-point conversion against the Rebels.
“He showed a lot of poise and confidence out on the field today,” said Tiger starting offensive guard T-Bob Hebert. “Jordan has hung in there when a lot of people outside this lockerroom didn’t think he could play. We all knew he could and it was just him settling down, playing his game and then the staff putting together a gameplan that could put him in the best spots to make plays.
“You respect the fact that he just didn’t give up on himself when times were tough.”
The (10-1) LSU Tigers face the (9-2) Arkansas Razorbacks this Saturday.
While Jefferson is helping keep the Tigers in the hunt for a BCS bowl game, another former Wildcat player is rewriting the NCAA record books.
It took him less than three years, but former Destrehan High School wide receiver/return specialist Damaris Johnson is now the NCAA’s all-time record holder in kickoff return yardage with 3,202 yards.
With two kickoff returns for 87 yards against UTEP Johnson broke the previous record owned by former Western Michigan standout Brandon West who set the high mark of 3,118 yards (2006-2009).
While Johnson added 87 yards of kickoff yards to his career mark he also had 280 yards of all-purpose yards in Tulsa’s 31-28 win against UTEP.
It was his 17th career game at Tulsa with 200 or more all-purpose yards and the fourth time he has eclipsed that mark in 2010.
The 5-7, 175 pound athlete now has 7,249 all-purpose yards during his college career and is fourth on the NCAA career all-purpose yards chart. He moved past former East Carolina running back Chris Johnson, now with the Tennessee Titans, Central Michigan wide receiver/ return man Antonio Brown, Navy halfback Napoleon McCallum and former University of Texas running back Ricky Williams to take over the fourth spot of all-time.
Johnson is only the seventh player in NCAA FBS history to surpass 7,000 career all-purpose yards.
Reed, Landry make amazing play for Ravens
Former Destrehan High School star Ed Reed recorded his 50th interception of his future NFL Hall of Fame career Sunday when the Baltimore Ravens defeated the Carolina Panthers 37-13. The Ravens perennial Pro-Bowler intercepted the pass and ran 19 yards upfield before pitching the ball backwards to former Hahnville High School quarterback Dawan Landry, who now is a starting strong safety for the Ravens, and he ran it the last 23 yards for a touchdown. The Destrehan to Hahnville connection strikes again.
