Hahnville never stood a chance as Destrehan proved once again they are the team to beat in the Bayou District and perhaps even the state.
The intra-parish rivalry turned out to be undefeated Destrehan’s (5-0, 2-0) most lopsided victory of the year as they scored early and often en route to a 49-0 victory over Hahnville (2-3, 1-1).
In the first quarter alone Destrehan scored four touchdowns starting off on a 50-yard floater from quarterback to Donovan Isom to Kirk Meritt on the third play of the game. Isom followed this up with three more strikes including an 11-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver John Williams followed up by a 15-yard pass to wide receiver Alfred Smith for their third score of the game before going back to Williams for 50-yard catch and run touchdown.
In the second quarter Isom kept a drive alive when, as he was getting wrapped up for a sack, he let go a shovel pass to tailback Will Mathews who took it for a 23-yard gain that set up a 6-yard quarterback keeper for Isom’s sole rushing touchdown on the night.
Hahnville could hardly get a first down on the ground or in the air and quarterback Logan Martindale was picked off by Destrehan free safety Brandon Scott on his second pass of the game. Two series later Martindale would throw another interception, but this one would be returned 30 yards for a touchdown by Destrehan linebacker RaeJuan Marbley.
After the Wildcats went up 42-0, Isom was benched in favor of backup quarterback Rashaud Joesph. But after taking over with about two minutes left in the first half Isom would come in for a two-minute drill driving the ball to inside the Tigers’ ten yard line, but the Wildcats let the clock out to end the first half instead of trying for another touchdown.
Joseph played quarterback for the Wildcats for the entire second half and made the last score of the game on a one-yard quarterback keeper on a drive that began with a long punt return by wide receiver Michael Smith.
Sophomore quarterback Mike Neal came in for Hahnville for the fourth quarter, but did not experience success either as he was picked off by Destrehan defensive back Austin Dickerson who returned the ball to the ten yard line before being forced out of bounds by Neal. After three consecutive runs without a first down Joseph downed the ball and Destrehan turned it over on downs to Hahnville with three minutes left to play.
Hahnville running back Mikquel Chest saw his first action of the year on the last series and picked up two first downs, including Hahnville’s longest play of the game as the Tigers ran the clock out for their third straight home loss of the season.
