The Destrehan Wildcats are now 3-2 in district play after victories over Thibodaux and South Lafourche bookended a loss to Central Lafourche.
Destrehan (14-7) led for almost the entire game against Thibodaux, but gave up the lead with 11 seconds left. That paved the way for a last-second shot by Trey Jones that gave Destrehan a thrilling 48-47 win.
“It was on the road and it was a big win,” Destrehan head coach Todd Bourg said. “We took six charges in the first half and held them to 13 points, but they came back in the second half and took their first lead with seconds left. Our guys pulled out the win at the buzzer.”
David Green led the Wildcats with 13 points and seven rebounds. Clifton Adams added 11 points.
The Wildcats followed up the win with a 56-47 loss to Central Lafourche. Though Bourg said his teamdidn’t shoot well, he was proud of how hard they played.
“We missed a lot of shots at the bucket,” he said. “I think we were a little intimidated by their size and shot the ball too quick.”
Destrehan’s Trey Jones finished with 18 points in the loss. Lionel Maxon had 12 points.
Size has been an issue for Destrehan this season. The Wildcats’ tallest player is 6-foot-1, Bourg said.
“I think we’ve played pretty good, we just don’t have a bunch of size,” Bourg said. “I’m pleased overall, though we lost three games I don’t think we should have lost.”
Because of the size differential between Destrehan and several teams on their schedule, Bourg would like to see his team block out better and control the paint.
“In the games we’ve won, we’ve controlled the paint. In the games we’ve lost, we didn’t,” he said. “We’ve got to control the paint.”
Bourg also said some of his players got a late start this season due to the success of the Wildcat football team.
“Now that those guys have been back, we are starting to pick it up,” he said. “We have been more patient than we were last year and we are playing better defense.”
On Tuesday, the Wildcats improved to 3-2 in district play with a 67-63 win over South Lafourche.
Bourg believes his team is currently in the middle of the pack in District 7-5A, but says they have just as good of a shot at a district crown as anybody else.
“I told the guys that we have to win all our homes games and steal ones on the road,” he said. “East St. John is going to be tough, and to win district we will likely have to beat them at home and on the road. It’s going to be tough, but we are taking it one game at a time.”
