Destrehan dismantles Dutchtown, 45-14

This Destrehan football team is for real.

The Wildcats systematically dismantled Dutchtown 45-14 Friday night. Dutchtown entered the game with a 2-0 record and was by far the toughest team that Destrehan has faced this season.

Still, it’s almost impossible to slow down the Wildcats, especially when their defense plays just as well as their high-scoring offense.

A few minutes in the third quarter illustrated just how dangerous Destrehan can be. Starting on their own 39-yard line, the Wildcats needed just two quick plays to score and increase their lead to 24-7.

Junior running back Will Mathews got it started with a tough 13-yard run. On the next play, senior quarterback Donovan Isom fired a short pass to Kurk Merritt and the junior did the rest, speeding past defenders for a 48-yard score.

Just seconds later, a botched reverse on Dutchtown’s first series gave the Wildcats a chance to put the Griffins away. The ball bounced back to the 5-yard line and then tumbled back to the end zone where it was picked up by senior defensive back Talvin Michael.

Just like that it was 31-7.

Destrehan got on the scoreboard with 7:51 in the first quarter after Isom found John Williams and the sophomore weaved his way 38 yards through Dutchtown defenders for the score.

Dutchtown answered with a 75-yard drive that was helped by a 15-yard penalty on Destrehan for illegal participation. But that was as close as the Griffins would get.

A 19-yard field goal by Cameron Walsh put the Wildcats up 10-7 with 10:02 left in the second quarter and a big special teams play by Korian Reynaud, who recovered a muffed punt at the Dutchtown 47, set up another quick score.

Mathews picked up 13 yards on Destrehan’s first play following the fumble and then turned a short pass into a 19-yard gain on the next play. The Wildcats went back to Mathews for the third time on a 9-yard run, and Isom eventually dove in from 3 yards out to put the Wildcats up 17-7 at the half.
