Destrehan clinches share of District 7-5A crown

Razan Keller scored two touchdowns to lead Destrehan as the Wildcats rolled past host Central Lafourche 42-0 on Friday night and clinched at least a share of the District 7-5A championship.

Jai Eugene found Calvin Bullock on a touchdown pass, while backup quarterback Ross Rogan hit Jase Ollis for a score. Jaden Harding scored on a pick six interception for a touchdown, and Tyler Morton returned a punt for a score.

Destrehan has now won six consecutive games, sitting at 6-1 on the season overall and 5-0 in district play.

Central Lafourche remains winless at 0-7 overall, 0-5 in district play.

Destrehan coach Marcus Scott said while the Wildcats could have been a bit sharper, the team’s fast start and strong overall effort left him pleased.

“We sputtered at a couple of points, but overall it was a good showing,” Scott said.

Destrehan led 28-0 at halftime.

The Wildcats’ defense entered the game with just seven touchdowns allowed this season, a mark that held firm after Friday’s contest.

The task this week was to stop running back Scotty Arcement on early downs, forcing Central Lafourche to drop back into long yardage conversion scenarios. Mission accomplished on that front for DHS.

“We started getting them in some third and long situations, and when you can do that consistently, you have the chance to get off the field or even force a turnover,” Scott said. “It gives you the chance to have a lot of success.”

Next week’s matchup at Hahnville will be much anticipated, as it is every year, and as has often been the case, a district title hangs in the balance. If Destrehan wins, it secures the outright district crown. If Hahnville wins, then the two teams would be tied for the district crown – along with, potentially, a third team in East St. John, as all three could close the season’s final week with one district loss.
