Destrehan bests ESJ but falls to Hahnville

Mallory Laumann and her Destrehan teammates are pushing forward as district play begins.

Destrehan split a pair of key district matches in the past week, falling to archrival Hahnville in four games but besting East St. John in four to move to 3-2 in overall district play.

Hahnville defeated DHS 26-24, 25-23, 24-26 and 25-8. The Wildcats defeated East St. John 22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-12.

In the Hahnville game, Destrehan’s Noelle Kelley and Emily Richardson served two aces. Johnesha Vinnett had 10 kills. Jaz’myn Lewis had eight kills. Korinne Kimble had nine digs and Gia Zeringue had a block.

Hahnville’s Kylie Roux made 20 kills and 11 digs. Stephanie Oubre made 16 kills. Alyssa Folse made 12 digs and Gabby Constant made 10. Ellie Bergeron made 38 assists.

In the ESJ victory, Tabitha Tabb and Emily Richardson each served three aces. Johnesha Vinnett had eight kills and four blocks. Richardson had 14 assists and Korinne Kimble made 11 digs.

Destrehan’s loss to Hahnville was hard-fought, and DHS coach Alexis Keller said she’s already looking forward to the rematch on Oct. 27.

“It’s always a good competition and a fun game,” Keller said. “Both sides played really hard. We’ll host in two weeks and that’s always a plus, to have it in your home gym. I didn’t feel like we really played our game or to the best of our ability, but we will have another chance to.”

The victory over East St. John gave Destrehan a winning district record after splitting four games through the first round of district play.

Keller said the hitting tandem of Vinnett and  Lewis has made a difference. Vinnett is the team’s leading hitter and tallest player, and Lewis has emerged as a strong compliment at the net.

“Jasmine is stepping up and proving to be consistent and reliable,” Keller said. “Her style is such a change-up from Johnesha, and those two having such different approaches gives the opposing defense a lot of problems.”

Keller said Richardson has also been a key piece of the puzzle.

“She’s been our playmaker,” Keller said. “She’s really playing well.”

Destrehan will compete in the Newman tournament on Friday and Saturday before taking on a pair of key district battles next week.

“We can’t afford to ease up at the tournament,” Keller said. “We need to play our best and get ourselves ready for the final stretch.”

Next week, the Wildcats are set to host defending district champion H.L. Bourgeois Tuesday (JV and Varsity, 4 p.m.) and travel to Thibodaux Thursday (JV and varsity, 4 p.m.).
