Destrehan advances to state championship game

The Destrehan Lady Wildcats are on their way to the Class 5A state championship game after beating No. 15 Helen Cox 70-57.

The Lady Wildcats will face the winner of No. 5 Denham Springs and No. 9 Mt. Carmel at 6 p.m. on Saturday in Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles.

Destrehan jumped on top of Helen Cox early thanks to trio of 3-pointers by Jordan Dabney that gave the Lady Wildcats a 14-7 lead after the first quarter.

A 10-0 Cox run in the second quarter closed the gap, but the Lady Wildcats still led 26-22 at the break before putting the game away in the third quarter.

Destrehan freshman Cara Ursin scored 12 points in the quarter to push her squad to a 17-point, 49-32 advantage after three quarters.

Cox outscored Destrehan 25-21 in the final quarter, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Lady Wildcats punched their ticket to the state title game.

With the win, Destrehan stretched their already impressive win streak to 28 games. They have not lost since Nov. 25.
