Playing at St. Thomas Aquinas in Hammond, despite being the lower seed and earning home field advantage, didn’t seem to disturb the Destrehan Fighting Wildcats as they defeated Captain Shreveport 12-2 Tuesday night.

No. 10 seed Destrehan went up big early on No. 23 seed Capt. Shreveport by scoring three runs in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Dane Simon scored first for the Wildcats when senior Brennan Breaud hit a double to left field on a hard ground ball.

Destrehan senior Connor Caminita scooted over to third from first on Breaud’s double. Junior Brandon Wild stepped into the batter’s box and grounded out to first base, but not before driving in Caminita to put another run on the board. Destrehan sophomore Kohen Granier was struck by a pitch on the next at bat and just to show there were no hard feelings stole second base, while Breaud stole home to score the third run in the bottom of the first.

Capt. Shreveport trailed by one, 3-2, going into the bottom of the fourth, but the Fighting Wildcats must have heard the steps because senior Louis Kieffer homered to left field to score Granier and  put his team up 5-2. Two more runs were scored later in the inning when Caminita hit a sac fly to plate senior Logan Krajcer and junior Miles Patureau.

In the bottom of the fifth, the wheels came off for Shreveport.

Senior Nathan Pilutti scored after Patureau was walked on a full base count and Granier scored on a passed ball. Simon came to the plate and singled to third base on a bunt, plating junior Jared Montz. Simon advanced to second on an error on a throw and Patureau came in to score the eleventh run for Destrehan.

Late in the bottom of the sixth, Caminita scored when Granier drove a line drive to left field for the final run of the game.

Destrehan head coach Chris Mire said despite the location and time changes, the team showed up prepared and focused.I’m extremely proud of these guys,” Mire said. “We were the aggressor and executed our game plan to perfection. Cole Martin controlled the game by pounding the strike zone and our defense was incredible. Just a great team effort.”

Junior Cole Martin got the win in six innings giving up two hits, allowing only two runs, walking four and striking out six.

The Fighting Wildcats advance to the second round of the playoffs against the winner of No. 7 seed Denham Springs and No. 26 seed Northshore.

The best of three game series will take place on May 1 and May 2.
