The Hahnville Tigers’ defense continued to overpower their opponents last week, picking up their third shutout in four games with a 34-0 win over O. Perry Walker.
And while the defense has been consistent all season long, the offense is beginning to come into their own as the team approaches the midway point, which should be a scary thought for upcoming district opponents.
“I thought it was our best performance to date,” Hahnville head coach Lou Valdin said. “It was the best we played offensively and defensively and the best we played on special teams.”
B.J. Young sparked the offense in the first half, tossing three touchdown passes to give his team a 20-0 advantage at the break. Two of those passes went to Lauren White, while one went to Laron Byrd. Young finished 11 of 22 for 137 yards. With Young tearing through the Chargers in the air in the first half, the Tigers went to a ground attack in the second, with Jai Steib scoring a pair of touchdowns on runs of 5 and 11 yards. Steib finished with 73 yards on 12 carries, with Greg Julien adding 62 yards on 16 carries.
“We were able to run the football and our pass protection was good,” Valdin said.
Defensively, Hahnville dominated the night, with Byrd leading the charge with two intereceptions. Walker was only able to pound out 124 yards, with 52 of those coming on the game’s final play. The Chargers’ star running back, Tyrone Duplesis, was limited to only 65 yards on 15 carries.
“They have a really good running back and we were able to shut him down,” Valdin said. “I also thought our coverage was really good.”
The undefeated Tigers will now turn their attention to John McDonogh, who has a 2-2 record heading into Friday night’s contest. McDonogh opened the season with two straight losses, falling 36-22 to Chalmette and 48-12 to Terrebonne, but bounced back with a pair of victories over Reed and Douglass, pushing their record to .500 in the process.
“They have some pretty good athletes, but they have to play both ways,” Valdin said. “So, we think if we can jump on them early we will wear them down. The key is to have good tempo early and try to get on top early.”
The way Hahnville’s been playing the first month of the seaoson, getting on top early shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
“We are getting better every week,” Valdin said. “Obviously, this week is the last week before district and we want to play better than we did against O. Perry Walker so that we keep progressing. We want to peak by our first district ball game.”
