The Louisiana Big Game Recognition Program has added 19 deer so far to their Big Buck Harvest List for the 2006-07 deer season.
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Wildlife Division initiated the Louisiana Big Game Recognition Program in 1992 to recognize quality deer harvested each season that may not score high enough for the Louisiana Big Game Records Program.
The Big Buck Harvest List is one of the items included in the new Big Game Records Newsletter produced by LDWF Wildlife Division staff and posted on their Web site at www.wlf.louisiana.gov/hunting/biggamehunts.
The newsletter includes articles on the new Youth Deer Hunter Registry, deer tagging for the 2007-08 season, 2006-07 Wildlife Management Area Big Buck List and explanations of the Louisiana Big Game Records and Recognition programs.
“We hope to produce two to three newsletter per year. One in the spring, another right before the fall hunting season and a final newsletter sometime in December,” said LDWF Wildlife Division Administrator David Moreland.
“These newsletters will contain information on upcoming and past hunting seasons focusing on the big whitetail deer and turkey harvests across the state.”
The LDWF Deer and Big Game Records programs will initiate a Youth Deer Hunter Registry beginning with the 2007-08 season. Youth hunters, 15 years of age or younger, can register their deer, buck or doe, large or small, with LDWF.
LDWF will then recognize these youth hunters, especially thosewho may have harvested their first deer on their Web site atwww.wlf.louisiana.gov/hunting/biggamehunts.
The 2006-07 WMA Big Buck List documents the 10 largest bucks taken on WMAs with the largest one coming from the Sherburne WMA. This eight-point-deer weighed 250 pounds with 21-inch main beams and an 18-inch inside spread.
