Colleges already eyeing HHS sophomore back

Hahnville head coach Nick Saltaformaggio has big plans for sophomore running back Anthony Williams — and so does Tulane coach Curtis Johnson, if he has his way.

Williams is the rare player to receive a Division I offer entering his sophomore season, earning one from Tulane after attending a Green Wave prospect camp last month.

The 5-foot-9, 170-pound running back recorded 40 times of 4.32 and 4.31 and a standing high jump of 36.5” at the camp, which drew the heavy attention of Johnson and his staff. Williams also stood out in 7 on 7 drills, and reportedly has also drawn interest from LSU.

“He’s very, very talented,” Saltaformaggio said. “It’s very hard to play as a freshman, or even a sophomore, at Hahnville, but he is. He’s obviously a special talent, one of the very best around here. And I don’t mean at Hahnville, I’m talking about the Metro area as a whole.”

Williams was not a primary rusher last season, splitting his duties at running back, defensive back and on special teams. That will change this season, says the second-year Tigers’ coach.

“We’ve changed our offense because of him,” Saltaformaggio said. “We’ve been a double slot option team, but we’ll be running out the I-formation this year. We’re going to give him the ball.

“He’s electric. What’s special about him is he’s that fast whether he’s running north and south or east and west. He’s going to make me a better coach, for sure.”
