Wildcat standouts make college choices to further football career
Two more key figures in Destrehan High School’s undefeated 2008 season and a second straight Class 5A state championship have made their decisions on where they will attend college.
Cornerback/return specialist Antonio Parker has verbally committed to the University of Tulsa.
Parker, a 5’ 9”, 175-pound cornerback, was in on 83 tackles and recorded six pass interceptions in 2008.
He also returned five kicks for scores as a senior, and the big-play defensive artist has accounted for 15 pass interceptions over the past two seasons.
The speedy cover-man was being wooed by SMU, Boise State, Mississippi State and Louisiana Tech before deciding on Tulsa.
Parker joins former Wildcat standout wide receiver/return specialist Damaris Johnson, who as a freshman registered over 2,000 yards of total offense in 2008 for Tulsa.
Parker is the fourth Louisiana prep standout to commit to Tulsa for 2009 and he joins Lutcher High School safety Dexter McCoil, East St. John High School running back Alex Singleton and St. Thomas More in Lafayette wide receiver Jordan James to verbally commit to the Golden Hurricanes.
Tulsa is also recruiting Destrehan All-State linebacker Rufus Porter, who visited SMU this weekend and is being actively recruited by Louisiana Tech and Mississippi State.
Destrehan quarterback Wynrick Smothers has verbally committed to play for Central Arkansas University. The 6-0, 185-pound signal caller led the Wildcats to a state championship title in his first season as a starter.
The very athletic quarterback was being recruited by Southeastern Louisiana, SMU, Memphis and Southern University.
Smothers will be coached by former Nicholls State All-American linebacker Clint Conque at Central Arkansas.
Conque, who is entering his ninth season as head coach for UCA, has mentored two-time All-Southland Conference standout quarterback Nathan Brown, who recently played in the 2009 Senior Bowl All-Star game in Mobile, Alabama and is expected to be selected in the middle rounds of the 2009 April NFL draft.
Central Arkansas opens the 2009 college football season traveling to play the University of Hawaii.
Super Bowl XLIII
Super Bowl XLIII will be played this coming Sunday in Tampa, Florida and while I like to pick underdogs in certain spots I can’t go that route this coming Super Sunday.
I am as shocked as anyone on the playoff success of the Arizona Cardinals, but I have a strong feeling that the big-play offensive success of Cardinal quarterback Kurt Warner and the best wide receiver in pro football in Larry Fitzgerald will be throttled by the relentless pressure defense of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Similar to last year’s Super Bowl loser, the New England Patriots, the Cardinals success has been fueled by an explosive offensive attack, but the “pressure breaks the pipe” philosophy of the New York Giants defense broke down the New England Patriots attack and the big-play pitch-and-catch skills of Tom Brady and Randy Moss all game long.
I really believe that the Steelers have hit their playoff stride also and blessed with a great defense led by outside linebacker James Harrison and safety Troy Polamalu they will prevail.
Kurt Warner is an excellent football player and role model for everyone to never quit on a dream, but Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is no slouch himself.
The strong-armed signal-caller carried this Steelers team on his back early in the season when they couldn’t generate much of a running game, but that has changed over the past few weeks and halfback Willie Parker is healthy and running with great confidence.
I am picking from the head and not from the heart, and selecting the Pittsburgh Steelers to win their sixth Super Bowl championship Sunday night against the Arizona Cardinals.
