Football players between the ages of 7 to 17 will get a chance to work out with several NFL players when Ed Reed comes to Destrehan to host his football camp next week.
The camp takes place from Tuesday, June 19 through Thursday, June 21 from 9 a.m. until noon each day. The camp will be held at Destrehan High School.
Several All-Pro NFL players will join Reed, a ball hawking safety for the Baltimore Ravens that has been selected to eight Pro Bowls. Past players who have attended include Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis and Washington Redskins wide receiver Santana Moss.
“We usually find out who’s coming when Ed first shows up, but I do know there will be several NFL players here,” Robicheaux said.
The players will be available for autographs and pictures during the last day of camp.
The main objective of the camp is to teach the basic fundamentals of football. Each camper will be instructed in the techniques used in every position on the field to enhance their skills and make them better football players, according to Robicheaux.
“The first day we are going to work on offensive skills and the second day we are going to work on defense,” he said. “On the third day we put them both together. Players that attend this camp are going to get a good knowledge of the game of football.”
Reed, who starred at Destrehan before embarking on an All-American career at Miami, is the huge draw to the camp.
“A lot of guys do these camps and they just show up to take a picture. Ed doesn’t do this to get his picture in the paper, he just comes down to spend time with the kids,” Robicheaux said. “He doesn’t just have his name on the camp, but he comes down and gives his time and interacts and plays with them.
“He is from St. Rose so he knows what a lot of these kids are going through and can relate to them and tell them what they need to hear.”
Along with giving motivational speeches to the campers, Reed also gets his hands dirty by illustrating the defensive techniques that have made him one of the top players in the NFL. Robicheaux and his entire coaching staff will also be on hand throughout the camp.
The older players will take part in 7-on-7 games while the younger kids scrimmage by playing touch football.
