All-Pro Reed bringing NFL with him to DHS

Parish football players between the ages of 7 to 17 will get the chance to work out with pros when Ed Reed comes to Destrehan to host his football camp next week.

The camp takes place from Tuesday, June 21 through Friday, June 24 from 9 a.m. until noon each day.

Several All-Pro NFL players will join Reed, a ball hawking safety for the Baltimore Ravens that has been selected to seven Pro Bowls. The full list of the players was not available as of press time.

The camp’s main objective is to teach the basic fundamentals of football. Each camper will be instructed in the techniques used in every position on the field to enhance their skills and make them better football players, according to Destrehan head football coach Chris Stroud.

“They will learn what we do at Destrehan High School. They go through our practice drills, speed work and agility training,” Stroud said. “While going through all that they get mentored by professional football players.”

Reed, who starred at Destrehan before embarking on an All-American career at Miami, is the huge draw to the camp.

“The big thing is that Ed talks to the kids about working hard and setting goals,” Stroud said. “He’s a St. Rose guy, so he knows where these kids are coming from and he can relate to them.”

Reed will bring fellow NFL players to Destrehan to work with the campers on Thursday and Friday. The players will be available for autographs and pictures.

“I don’t have enough words to say what Ed means to this program,” Stroud said. “A lot of guys put their name on a camp, but Ed actually comes and spends all of his time with these kids.”

Along with giving motivational speeches to the kids, Reed also gets his hands dirty by illustrating the defensive techniques that have made him one of the top players in the NFL. Stroud and his entire coaching staff will also be on hand throughout the camp.

“While the camp is designed to keep you busy learning the game, we have also set aside some time for special activities that the (campers) will find enjoyable,” Stroud said.

The older players will take part in 7-on-7 games while the younger kids scrimmage by playing touch football.

The cost of the camp is $40, which covers registration, instruction and camp T-shirts. For an application and more information, contact Jeanne Hall at (985)764-9946, ext. 100 or Stroud at (985)764-9946.

The camp takes place at Destrehan High School.
