Candice McGee is district MVP
The All-District team was announced for area girls’ basketball and several girls from Hahnville and Destrehan made the team, an indicator of the success each had this year. Candice McGee, a transfer student to Destrehan from Cabrini High School in New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina, led the honors by being named MVP for the district. McGee was instrumental in leading Destrehan to the Sweet 16 in the playoffs.
On the defensive side of the ball, guard/forward Danielle Douglas for Hahnville was rewarded for her tenacious work and versatility as the Defensive MVP. As merely a sophomore, Douglas should contribute for years for the Tigers. “She’s the type of person that shows great leadership on the court,” said Hahnville coach Kevin Robicheaux.
Playing forward and center, McGee is a senior and recently signed with UNO to continue her basketball career on the colligate level. “She was a team leader on and off floor and did whatever it took to win,” said Destrehan coach Ulysses Frontha. A powerhouse in all offensive aspects of the game, McGee led Destrehan in scoring and rebounding.
First Team All-District for Hahnville was guard Nadia Cox, a sophomore. Although the opposing coach, Frontha had nothing but accolades for the youngster: “She could shoot the lights out. She was someone we looked out for on the floor.”
While Robicheaux enjoyed the honors his girls received, he said “We try to emphasize team goals.”
“Hahnville has a wealth of talent and they are young,” said Frontha, adding the youth movement that Hahnville is experiencing will make them very difficult in the coming years. “Kevin Robicheaux does great job with his girls,” said Frontha.
Second Team All-District for Destrehan was two of its signature players: seniors Shanna and Shunna Richards. Identical twins, Shunna and Shanna were the both guards for Destrehan. “They are real quick and they are inseparable, and they might even play together in college,” said Frontha, adding that twins were great shot 3-point shooters and played great defense.
Freshman point guard Twanna Lee also made second team for Destrehan. Lee’s highlight of the season was the 32 points she scored against archrival Hahnville in a playoff game. “She was our general on the floor,” said Frontha.
Three girls took honorable mention locally: sophomore Cheyney Hills for Hahnville, senior Schaymane Moses for Destrehan and junior Kyla Thomas for Hahnville.
