Ever since Charlie Stubbs took over the head coaching reigns at Nicholls State back in 2010, he has tried to add some size and physicality along both his offensive and defensive lines and do a better job of recruiting the talent rich River Parishes area.
Last week the Colonels added two talented former Destrehan High School standout offensive linemen in offensive center/guard Ashton Duhe and offensive tackle/guard Noland Sharpe to their roster for 2013.
Duhe (6’3″, 305 pounds) was a four-year starter for Destrehan and helped bring two state titles to the school. The versatile offensive lineman did start one game for SMU in 2012, but he has two years of eligibility remaining and is immediately eligible to play for the Colonels in 2013.
“Ashton brings great size to our offensive line. He has seen quite a bit of playing time at SMU and their offensive scheme is similar to ours, so I think the transition will be very smooth,” Stubbs said. “He had a tremendous prep career at Destrehan and our coaching staff was well aware of his skills as a player and also his work in the classroom.
“We are excited to have him compete for a starting spot on our team, and from what I have seen on film, he brings the toughness, quick feet and technical skills we are looking for in an offensive lineman.”
Stubbs said he also likes that Duhe has been a part of two successful programs – Destrehan and SMU.
“He has a great attitude and work ethic that goes along with being associated with winning programs,” Stubbs said.
Sharpe, a 6-foot-2, 265-pound tackle who projects as an offensive guard at the college level, was a three-year starter at Destrehan and was an All-District selection each season.
“Noland Sharpe was someone our recruiting coordinator and coaching staff were well aware of and we were impressed with his quickness, his quick set-up skills as a pass blocker and he is also a very physical run blocker,” Stubbs said. “Noland was someone who focused very sharply on his academic standing the past few months and we were impressed with his work ethic and attention to detail.”
Stubbs said he is becoming more aware of the talent in St. Charles Parish.
“Noland and Ashton bring us the type player we want here and both are also players associated with winning and what it takes to help build a program,” Stubbs said. “We are thrilled to have both here competing for playing time and starting time.”
