Suspicious Fires

A fire destroyed an abandoned home on 217 Maloney Street, in Des Allemands and damaged two other structures close by.

Fire Chief Jamie Cortez of the Des Allemands Fire Department said crews were called to put out a fire Sunday, March 25, at 10:46 p.m.

Cortez said an investigation is ongoing because the blaze is of a ‘suspicious nature.’

“There was no electricity, gas or water turned on in the house, so the cause of the fire is unknown,” he continued.

“The house on Maloney Street was empty and had been abandoned for a long time.”

The other two houses caught in the blaze received minor damage.

“One of the homes had vinyl siding and the heat from the fire melted it,” Cortez continued.

“There was a shed right behind one of the homes on the street that was burned in spots,” he said.

Cortez said no one was injured, but two additional fire departments were called to assist in putting out the fire to keep it from spreading.

“Bayou Gauche Volunteer Fire Department and Paradis fire department helped us bring the blaze under control,” he said.
