SCPPS’ Learn With Us Bus rolls through town with new opportunities for families

The Learn With Us Bus is on the move once again, and with a visit to the vehicle comes new and unique ways of learning for St. Charles Parish families.

The bus is a joint project between the United Way of St. Charles and St. Charles Parish Public Schools.

“The Learn With Us Bus started during the 2019-2020 school year,” District Title I Coordinator Lacey Powers said. “Last school year it made stops in our community handing out early literacy materials, and this school year we are back in the community hosting playgroups focusing on kindergarten readiness.”

Completion of the bus includes the work and coordination of various school system departments, including the Satellite Center’s digital media class, Hahnville High School’s art class and carpentry department and the district’s transportation department.

The bus provides books, toys, games and more for children of preschool age through second grade.

The bus is a mobile family education resource for parents, similar to the elementary school Family Centers. The bus provides books, toys and games for children of preschool age through second grade, internet access for parents to access school forms and information and information about additional community resources available to St. Charles Parish residents.

“Our goal is to engage families of young children in St. Charles Parish with fun and exciting kindergarten readiness lessons,” Powers said. “We want each visit on the bus to be a learning experience for both the adults and the children. We hope to introduce skills that are necessary for kindergarten readiness and give families tools they can use to help teach their little ones at home. The Learn With Us Bus has knowledgeable teachers and staff that are ready to help answer questions and get your little ones ready for kindergarten.”

The bus also has Chromebooks and internet access for families to use.
