Among the most important days of the year in a democracy are election days, and one of those arrives this weekend in St. Charles Parish.
All eligible voters who have not done so in early voting should save time to cast their ballots on two important issues Saturday between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.
One of those issues is whether or not to renew a $2.6 million-a-year St. Charles Parish Hospital tax and the other is a runoff between candidates Jarvis Lewis and Julia Fisher-Perrier to fill the West Bank at-large seat on the St. Charles Parish Council.
The hospital election is an important one, to say the least. In addition to saving lives of our citizens, our parish hospital can provide many medical services locally that otherwise would require extra miles of travel to receive.
The tax will help provide emergency services right away with state-of-the-art ambulances that can save all-important time in getting patients to the hospital.
The location of many large industrial plants in the parish makes the availability of top-notch hospital services here very important, not only for regular services, but in cases where accidents on the job occur. It makes renewal of the hospital tax all the more important to consider.
The at-large council member election is also very important because the winner will occupy an important seat on the council, which decides how our parish is governed and determines to a great extent how our lives proceed in it.
