One of the big issues in this Presidential campaign should be our foreign policy. But just about all the candidates have said on the subject so far has been to get our troops out of Iraq or let them remain.
There has been no emphasis on why we should do either one and how we should followup. So let’s seek our own reasons.
If we stay in Iraq, we will try to democratize the Middle East into a region where terrorism will not be allowed to ferment into a greater threat against us. Reason number two is to help the people over there control their own fates by achieving freedom for themselves to decide how they should live. The third reason would be to help create a world of peaceful co-existence among nations and people starting with one country and letting it serve as a model for other totalitarian nations there to follow.
On the other side of the issue, if we pull all of our troops out of Iraq, we will be leaving the problem up to others to handle. We’ll let the people of Iraq, or someone who takes over the reins, like Saddam Hussein, determine their future. We will have to depend upon our peaceful messages and other non-aggressive influences to hopefully turn the Middle East into a region where freedom and justice can prevail and spread throughout the world.
Which one of those developments would work?
Whether to pull the troops out of Iraq or not is only the preliminary question. What foreign policy we choose to promote a free and safe world for all is the next question to be answered to give us the overall solution.
