Detours ahead for residents

St. Charles Parish residents will have to detour in the weekends ahead to get from one end of their parish to the other.

As work progresses to replace the cables on the Hale Boggs Bridge, the crossing will be closed from  Friday at 10 p. m. to Monday at 4 a. m.the weekends of March 18-21 and March 25-28.

Unfortunately, the detour routes are not ideal. The Huey Long Bridge is the closest but it is under heavy construction to make it a six-lane crossing with shoulders on each side and two train tracks in the center. Slowdowns have been frequent there. To the west is the Veterans Memorial Bridge in Wallace which has easy access.

Another consideration on the east is the Crescent City Connection downtown. It’s further than the Huey but there are a lot of places to stop along the way.

So take your time, have a little patience and enjoy the added mileage. Get to know St. Charles and the surrounding parishes better. After all, it’s only two weekends of inconvenience.

The Hale is a unique structure. It was the first bridge of its kind built in the United States. And keeping it in good repair will be well worthwhile.
