GUSS
Janice Marie Guss on Sat., Sept 23 in an automobile accident in LaPlace. Daughter of Octavia S. Guss and the late Herman Guss Jr. Sister of Lysandra Johnson, Terry and Rodney Guss and the late Herman Guss, III. Also survived by a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Age 46 years. A native of Hahnville and a resident of LaPlace. “Janice worked most recently in the Technology department at the school board office, after working her way up from secretary, in special education, to part time college student after working all day, then became a middle school teacher at Landry Middle School. She was promoted to the technology department where she found her calling. Janice touched so many of our lives,” said friend Pam Dufrene. Relatives and friends of the family, also priest and parishioners of Our Lady of Grace and Holy Rosary Catholic Churches and all neighboring churches were invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 1 Rectory Lane in Hahnville on Thurs., Sept. 28 at 10 a.m. Father Bernard Francis, celebrant. Interment at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Taft. Visitation at the above named church was held from 8 a.m. until mass time. Rosary at 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family request Masses said in Janice Gross name at one of the above listed Catholic churches. Serviced by Robottom.

SMITH
Henry Smith Sr., age 85, went home to be with the Lord on Wed., Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. at Houma Hospice of Louisiana.  He was born in Raceland on Nov. 9, 1921.  He leaves his beloved wife of 53 years, Olivia T. Smith.  Three daughters: Eunice S. Gray (Charlie), Julia S. White (Wilbert) and Elise S. Boyd (Michel).  Three sons: Kerry Lee Smith Jr. (Casandra), Henry Smith Jr. (Roxanne) and Kevin Karson Smith (Pricilla).  He was born to the late Louis Smith and the late Bertha Allen Smith.  To this union 10 children were born.  Five brothers: James Smith, the late Henry Smith Sr., the late ALvin Smith, Joseph Smith Sr. and Earl Smith.  Five sisters: Clara S. Robinson, Rebecca S. Robinson, Geneva S. Giles, Ella S. Gray and Verna S. Reado.  He is also survived by a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.  The family, the pastor, Rev. Nolan Smith Sr., officers and members of the Third Zion Baptist Church, invited all who wish to attend to the service.  Services were held on Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. and dismissal was held Sept. 19 at 11 a.m.  Following the dismissal, Interment was held in the church cemetery.

COOLEY
Funeral services for Mark Stephen Cooley, age 36, of Houston, were held Fri., Sept. 15 at Ashford United Methodist Church in Houston.  Mr. Cooley passed away on Tues., Sept. 12, at his residence.  He was born Nov. 13, 1969 in New Orleans, Louisiana to parents Wendell and Judy Breaux Cooley.  Mark graduated from Hahnville High School, class of 1988.  He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Louisiana State University.  His professional career took off once he joined “Verio” in Dallas where he worked in an internet support call center and was promoted to manager of the entire department in just two years.  Mark moved to Houston at the end of 2002 in order to join “VeriCenter”, a web-hosting company, as project manager.  He was an avid mountain and road cyclist and has completed many a race, including the 2003 and 2004 MS 150.  Another one of his favorite pastimes was restoring old cars and spending time in nature.  Mark was a wonderful and most generous husband, son, brother and friend and will be terribly missed. Mark is survived by his wife, Sheila Cooley; his parents, Wendell and Judy Cooley; and his brother, Luke Cooley.  Interment was held at Hager Cemetery in De Quincy, Louisiana.  Memorials may be made to: Methodist Hospital Foundation c/o NeuroCircle Group, P.O.
