Police juror, businessman, pillar of the community
“Leonard K. Fisher Sr. came, put down roots, and plans to stay until the time comes for him to reach the front, or back, door of heaven. With supreme confidence, he knows he will enter, but is in no big hurry.”
That is the way Gene Yoes Jr. described Fisher’s view on life in a 1992 Herald-Guide article that profiled the Jewish businessman’s role in St. Charles Parish at the of 75.
Fisher, who passed away on Dec. 6 at the age of 89, brought his family to St. Charles Parish in 1945 after purchasing a small farm on Highway 90 in Luling where Wade Street is today.
He said that since he was a kid, he always wanted a farm.
So, after serving in World War II, he left the Navy and purchased a piece of land equipped with cattle and a tractor for $13,500.
He would eventually start a furniture store, Fisher Furniture Company, in Boutte and operate it for 40 years.
Fisher is known throughout the parish for the time he served on the police jury, his involvement in business and his lively opinions on politics.
“Politics is not for everyone,” Fisher told Yoes. “You have to have the skin of an alligator.”
Fisher also served on the St. Charles Parish Water Works Board and is credited for developing the Coronado subdivision in Luling and several other real estate projects including the expansion of Apple Street in Norco.
His family and friends treasured him for his guidance and caring, as well as his humor, and all that knew him were constantly entertained with his sharp wit and humorous storytelling.
Fisher is survived by his wife of 69 years Esther and was preceded in death by his parents, Hattie Hainebach and Louis Jacob Fisher; his brothers Leo, Albin and Moise Fisher; his sisters Rae Fisher and Irene Latter; and his sons Leonard K. Fisher Jr. and Kenneth James Fisher.
He was the father and father-in-law of Kay Fisher Blocker, Barry Blocker, Kathleen Glisan Fisher (Leonard), Mary Claire Melancon Fisher (Kenneth), Louis Jack Fisher, Kathy McManus Fisher and Michael Fisher.
His grandchildren are Brad Blocker, Todd Blocker, Chris Blocker, Scot Blocker, Brian Blocker, Rebecca Fisher, Jennifer Newton, ELizabeth Fisher, Leonard K. Fisher, III, Connie Powell, Donna Marman, Noel Fisher, Julia Perrier, Toni Stephens, Jessica Fisher and 18 great-grandchildren.
Fisher was laid to rest and made his way to the doors of heaven he spoke of on Dec. 11 at the Garden of Memories cemetery in Metairie.
