Hurschel John Burleigh, Sr.

 

Hurschel John Burleigh, Sr. entered into eternal rest on Saturday, July 17, 2021 at the age of 96.

He was the son of the late Lucius and Bathilde Burleigh, husband of the late Ruby McMurrain Burleigh, father of the late Hurschel J. Burleigh, Jr. (the late Barbara), Mary Ann Orgeron (James), Richard F. Burleigh (Kay), Sinie Marie LaCour (Bob), and Leigh Ann Smith (Wes). He was the grandfather of Cathy (Larry), Belenda, Michael, Derek, the late Ryan, the late Adam, the late Luke, Tara (Gerald), the late Tracie (the late Jason), Darren (Emily), Steven, Andrew (Jessica), Melissa (Mike), Alex, Matthew and Caitlin. Hurschel’s siblings are Doris Broussard (the late Roland), the late Emery Burleigh (Davie Lou), Audrey Burleigh (the late Helen), Genella Dawson (the late Melvin), and Larrol Burleigh (Eleanor). He is also survived by 9 great-grandchildren, 5 great great-grandchildren and many more family and friends. Hurschel retired from Monsanto after 34 years.

He lived a wonderfully full life and loved to help others. He was a lector and a Eucharistic Minister, serving at mass and bringing communion to the homebound. He led the rosary at the Luling Nursing Home for many years. Hurschel loved being associated with the Knights of Columbus, holding several offices and was an active member until a couple of years ago. He enjoyed exercising and taking line dancing classes at Anytime Fitness, participating in the Senior Olympics, league bowling with his friends and would make homemade pies as tokens of appreciation for his kind neighbors. Hurschel received the Citizen of the Year award and was the Grand Marshal of the Krewe of Lul, King of the Krewe of the Young at Heart and a Duke at Ashton Manor’s Mardi Gras Ball. After his beloved wife of 54 ½ years, Ruby, was called home to be with our Lord, he took over her Avon business and served his customers for nearly 20 years. He loved God, his family, his wonderful neighbors in Mimosa Park where he lived for over 55 years and the compassionate and caring staff at Ashton Manor. Hurschel will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to have known him.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, July 23, 2021 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Luling, LA., followed by the rosary, led by Knights of Columbus members from both Councils 2409 and 9933. Interment to follow at the St. Charles Cemetery and Mausoleum on Paul Maillard Road in Luling.
