Another hospitalized after sustaining injuries
One person was killed and another was injured when an accident occurred at the Valero St. Charles Refinery on Sunday, March 6.
After the unspecified accident, two contract workers were hospitalized and one of those workers died at the hospital late Sunday night, according to Bill Day, executive director of media relations at Valero Energy Corporation.
The person who died was identified as Victor Rodriguez, 30, of Houston. Joseph Barr, 28, of Mansura, was injured but survived.
“We don’t have any information on the cause of death or exactly what happened in the incident,” Day said. “It is still under investigation.”
The two contract workers were with Koch Specialty Plant Services and were doing maintenance on the refinery’s millisecond catalytic cracking unit, which makes gasoline.
“The unit was shut down for maintenance and the two workers were part of the group that was doing work on it,” Day said.
When the incident occurred, the refinery’s Emergency Response Team conducted a rescue of the two workers. The incident did not pose any danger to the surrounding neighborhoods.
A representative at Koch said that Barr is expected to recover.
