West Regional Library renovation contract awarded, expansion begins

Location to close March 11 & 12 for move

Clearing the way to begin work, the St. Charles Parish Council on Monday awarded the $1.7 million construction contract to renovate the West Regional Library.

Dynamic Constructors of Metairie won the bid for the nine-month renovation. The project architect is + One Design in Baton Rouge.

Representing the architectural firm, Fritz Embaugh assured the council incentives are in the contract to ensure the project is completed on time and without additional cost.

The contract calls for 270 days for construction, which Library Director Leann Benedict said will begin in April.

Benedict also announced the regional library will be closed Friday and Saturday (March 11 – 12) for the move to its temporary location.

Patrons can still visit the parish’s other library locations until the temporary location opens at 9 a.m. March 14.In February, the council also approved an amended lease agreement for the temporary location at 12439 Highway 90 next to Perque Carpet and Pizza Hut.

The location, which is being rented for $4,000 a month, will provide about 4,000 square feet, Benedict said. Half of the location will be used for storage with the other half for public and staff areas. It will still include access to six public computers, photocopiers, a small browsing collection, as well as requests will be taken for materials from the parish’s library system.

Benedict said the renovation will include a number of improvements, including an increase of the number of public computers, as well as the addition of a computer lab, more study rooms and a larger meeting room, which will be available at no cost to the local community.

The project also includes better lighting and accessibility in an addition to a new entrance to the Planetarium from inside the library.

As soon as the renovation is complete, Benedict said they also plan to bid out construction of a Norco Library, a projected $1 million project. The library is currently housed in a rental building.
