Walmart cell phone bandits likely not from St. Charles

Similar thefts reported at other Walmarts in Louisiana

It appears that three people sought in connection with the theft of 23 cell phones from Boutte’s Walmart last week are not from St. Charles Parish and have committed similar robberies in other areas of the state, according to Sheriff Greg Champagne.

Last Monday at 4:20 a.m., two boys entered the Boutte store and forced their way into a glass cell phone cabinet located in Walmart’s electronics department. They made off with 23 cell phones, with a combined value of $13,600, and ran out of the store.

Detectives believe the boys were picked up by a third suspect, who was driving a black four-door sedan that resembled a Nissan Altima.

St. Charles Parish detectives soon discovered that two other Walmarts–one in Hammond and another near Baton Rouge–were also robbed of cell phones in exactly the same manner a few hours before the Boutte theft.

“The descriptions of the perpetrators matches in all three [thefts],” Champagne said. “The time difference in the thefts also provided just enough time for them to drive the distance between the three stores.”

Champagne said that other Walmarts between Baton Rouge and New Orleans had reported similar thefts in mid-DecemberThe Sheriff’s Office released photos of the three suspects, who were caught on camera entering the Boutte Walmart.

Anyone who knows the identity of the three suspects, or who has any information on the incident, is asked to contact Det. Jody Weems at (985) 783-1135 or (985) 783-6807. Those with information can also call Crime Stoppers at 1(877) 903-STOP and are eligible for up to $2,500 for information leading to a successful conviction.
